Profile
Alphonso Davies is a Canadian left-back whose pace works in both directions. On the ball, he can drive past opponents and carry an attack towards the penalty area. When possession is lost, his acceleration helps him chase down runners before they can finish.
Born on 2 November 2000 in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana, Davies moved to Canada with his family in 2006 and grew up in Edmonton. He joined Vancouver Whitecaps’ academy in August 2015, then progressed through the reserve side to the first-team MLS roster in July 2016.
He joined Bayern Munich in January 2019 after largely playing on the left of Vancouver’s attack. His breakthrough came in 2019/20, when he moved to left-back and became part of the team that won the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.
Two moments from that season show how his speed changes situations. Against Borussia Dortmund in May 2020, he caught Erling Haaland as the striker advanced towards Manuel Neuer and took the ball away. Against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final that August, he dribbled past opponents to set up Joshua Kimmich during Bayern’s 8–2 win. The first run stopped a chance; the second created a goal.
Davies became a Canadian citizen in June 2017 and made his senior international debut that month. He won the Golden Boot and best young player award at the 2017 Gold Cup. At the 2022 World Cup, his header against Croatia became Canada’s first goal at a men’s World Cup finals.
In June 2024, Jesse Marsch named Davies Canada’s captain ahead of the country’s first Copa América appearance. Canada finished fourth, losing the third-place match to Uruguay on penalties.
His involvement in the 2026 World Cup was limited to one substitute appearance. He came on against South Africa on 28 June in Canada’s first men’s World Cup knockout victory. The co-hosts went on to finish their tournament in the last 16.
Alphonso Davies currently plays for Bayern München as a left-back. He has represented Canada internationally.
