Profile
Joshua Kimmich is a German midfielder and right-back whose passing can open a defence from deep. He can move the ball across the pitch to a waiting wide player, or supply the cross himself when he advances from the flank.
Born in Rottweil on 8 February 1995, he developed at VfB Bösingen and Stuttgart before joining RB Leipzig in 2013. Promotion to Germany’s second division followed in 2014. He moved to Bayern Munich in July 2015, taking a route through the lower divisions to the highest level of European club football.
The 2019/20 season brought a Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League treble. In the European final against Paris Saint-Germain, his cross to the far post found Kingsley Coman for the only goal. UEFA subsequently named Kimmich its Champions League Defender of the Season, recognising a campaign in which he started ten of Bayern’s eleven matches.
In 2026, he added another domestic double with Bayern. He started the 3-0 German Cup final victory over Stuttgart in May, completing the club’s first league-and-cup double since the treble season six years earlier.
His senior Germany debut came in May 2016, shortly before he helped the team reach the European Championship semi-finals. A Confederations Cup winner in 2017, he was appointed national-team captain in September 2024. He also captained Germany at the 2026 World Cup, which ended with a penalty-shootout defeat by Paraguay in the round of 32.
Kimmich’s passing is especially useful against opponents who crowd the centre. UEFA’s analysis of Bayern’s February 2023 win in Paris highlighted his switch of play to Coman, who then crossed from the left. Moving the ball to the flank let Bayern attack around a narrow defensive shape.
There is also value in where he stays. Against Real Madrid in April 2026, UEFA observed Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović supporting attacks from behind the ball alongside the centre-backs. They offered a pass back when teammates needed one and protection against counterattacks, giving the players ahead of them room to exchange positions.
Joshua Kimmich currently plays for Bayern München as a midfielder. He has represented Germany internationally.
