Profile
Lennart Karl is a German attacking midfielder who can play behind the striker or from the right wing. His game pairs acceleration over short distances with a willingness to take on defenders. A low centre of gravity helps his dribbling, while his left foot gives him a threat when moving inside to shoot.
His route to senior football passed through Viktoria Aschaffenburg and Eintracht Frankfurt before he joined Bayern Munich’s academy in summer 2022. He progressed through Bayern’s under-17 and under-19 teams, then began training with the senior squad. He was on the bench for both legs of Bayern’s 2024/25 Champions League quarter-final against Inter.
The rise was not entirely smooth. In an interview with Bayern, Karl recalled an inconsistent under-16 season and extra training before moving into the under-17s. He also explained that he had specifically practised finishing towards the far corner. His attacking habits were skills he worked on, rather than simply spontaneous moments on matchday.
Karl made his professional debut against Auckland City at the Club World Cup in June 2025. On 22 October that year, his goal against Club Brugge made him Bayern’s youngest Champions League scorer.
His contribution could extend beyond his preferred left foot. In Bayern’s 6–2 comeback against Freiburg during the 2025/26 league season, he beat a defender and scored with his right, then supplied Michael Olise’s equaliser. It was an example of dribbling serving both his own finishing and a teammate’s chance.
In 2026, Karl was part of Bayern’s Bundesliga and German Cup double. He came on for Jamal Musiala in the cup final on 23 May, when Bayern beat Stuttgart 3–0.
His international progress included Germany’s under-17 European Championship campaign in 2025 before a senior debut against Switzerland on 27 March 2026. Germany won that match 4–3. He was subsequently selected for the 2026 World Cup, but a training injury forced his withdrawal before the tournament.
