Profile
Leroy Sané is a German winger whose speed is particularly dangerous in one-on-one duels. He can carry the ball forward at pace and attack the space around a defender. His left foot also gives him a route towards goal when he starts from the right and cuts infield.
Born in Essen on 11 January 1996, he developed at Wattenscheid 09, Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen before playing senior football for Schalke in 2014. His European debut provided an early glimpse of his attacking threat: in March 2015, he came off the bench and scored in Schalke’s 4-3 win away to Real Madrid.
A move to Manchester City followed in 2016. Under Pep Guardiola, Sané won the Premier League in 2017/18 and 2018/19, while the Professional Footballers’ Association named him its Young Player of the Year for the first of those seasons.
He returned to Germany with Bayern Munich in 2020. Across five seasons there, he won four Bundesliga titles, adding a sustained run of domestic success to the medals he had collected in England. His Bayern spell ended with a move to Galatasaray in July 2025.
His goal against Real Madrid in the April 2024 Champions League semi-final first leg shows how positioning can amplify his speed. After half-time, Bayern moved him to the right and asked their wingers to stay wider. A switch of play isolated Sané against Ferland Mendy, allowing him to cut inside and shoot. Moving out towards the touchline had created the opportunity to attack infield.
At Galatasaray, he added the 2025/26 Süper Lig title in his first season. That championship extended his experience of winning domestic leagues to a third country, following his title-winning spells in England and Germany.
Sané made his senior Germany debut against France in November 2015. At the 2026 World Cup, he scored against Ecuador in a 2-1 group-stage defeat and started the round-of-32 tie against Paraguay. Germany drew 1-1 after extra time but lost the penalty shootout, ending their campaign.
Leroy Sané currently plays for Galatasaray as a right winger. He has represented Germany internationally.
