Current role at SC Freiburg · independent of the season filter
Through the match on 5 Nov 2026. Refreshed daily.
Profile
Igor Matanović is a central striker whose size gives teammates a target, but his game offers more than one finish. He can head a cross, finish a delivery with his foot or release a teammate with a short lay-off. Defenders must contest the first ball, track his movement and react when he passes.
Born in Hamburg, he entered FC St. Pauli’s youth system as a child and made his second-division debut at 17. Eintracht Frankfurt signed him in August 2021, then kept him at St. Pauli on loan for two seasons. A 2023/24 loan to Karlsruher SC brought a scoring breakthrough: 14 goals in 32 league appearances.
Back at Frankfurt in 2024/25, he played across the Bundesliga, Europa League and German Cup. Freiburg signed him in July 2025. On his Freiburg league debut that September, he came off the bench against Stuttgart, met Lukas Kübler’s cross to equalise and added a late penalty in a 3–1 win. His timing changed the match quickly.
The 2025/26 campaign supplied varied examples. In January, he headed Christian Günter’s cross past Maccabi Tel Aviv for the only goal of a Europa League game. In March, two second-half goals against former club St. Pauli turned a deficit into a 2–1 win. Both required him to find space as the move reached the box.
Freiburg reached the Europa League final in May 2026, with Matanović starting up front and playing the full 3–0 defeat to Aston Villa. Four days earlier, he headed in against RB Leipzig and laid the ball off for Derry Scherhant in a 4–1 league win that secured European qualification. He can connect an attack as well as finish one.
Matanović made his senior Croatia debut in September 2024 and scored against Scotland the following month. Croatia named him in its final squad for the 2026 World Cup, and he played against England, Ghana and Portugal. The round-of-32 defeat to Portugal ended Croatia's tournament.
His own account adds a defensive side: he has described learning to be the first defender from the front. His physical contests can make the ball stick, while pressing asks him to disrupt the next pass before an opponent builds an attack. Those connecting and defensive jobs explain why his role stretches beyond the last touch.
Igor Matanović currently plays for SC Freiburg as a striker. He has represented Croatia internationally.
