Profile
Gregor Kobel is a Swiss goalkeeper whose shot-stopping combines a large frame with quick movement. His feet help him adjust before a save, and he gets down rapidly when the ball is struck low. That agility also makes him difficult to beat when an attacker breaks through for a one-on-one.
His approach with the ball is pragmatic. In a 2026 interview, Kobel explained that a goalkeeper should assess the opposition's shape, the pressure on a teammate and the state of the match before choosing a pass. For him, building from the back means judging the risk of each situation, rather than following one rule every time.
Born in Zurich, Kobel developed at Grasshopper Club before moving to Hoffenheim's academy in 2014. His route into regular senior football took him through an Augsburg loan in January 2019 and then to Stuttgart that summer. He helped Stuttgart win promotion in 2020 before establishing himself in the Bundesliga.
Kobel joined Borussia Dortmund in summer 2021 after Stuttgart's return to the top flight. Dortmund's announcement highlighted his vocal communication as well as his work on the goal line. The move took him into Champions League football, and he helped Dortmund reach the 2024 final. UEFA's technical observers selected him as goalkeeper in their 2023/24 Champions League Team of the Season.
His international career developed alongside that club progress. Kobel made his senior Switzerland debut in September 2021 and played in the 3–2 win over Serbia at the 2022 World Cup. He was also selected for Switzerland's EURO 2024 squad, before starting all six of their matches at the 2026 World Cup.
The 2026 tournament supplied a defining example of his ability to keep a match alive. Against Colombia in the round of 16, he made several saves through a goalless 120 minutes, then stopped Cucho Hernández's penalty as Switzerland won the shootout 4–3. Their run ended against Argentina in the quarter-finals, a 3–1 defeat after extra time.
Gregor Kobel currently plays for Borussia Dortmund as a goalkeeper. He has represented Switzerland internationally.
