Profile
Cole Campbell’s route to German football crossed two countries before Dortmund. Born in Houston, he trained with Atlanta United’s academy, moved with his family to Iceland in 2020 and joined FH Hafnarfjörður. He debuted in Iceland’s top flight at 15, spent a short period with Breiðablik and entered Borussia Dortmund’s academy in summer 2022.
At Dortmund he moved through the under-17 and under-19 teams. The under-19s won the western division of the A-Junioren-Bundesliga in both 2023 and 2024. Campbell then gained opportunities with the reserves and first team.
His attacking tools were visible in an under-19 derby against Schalke. Dortmund attacked through Campbell and fellow wide player Ousmane Diallo. Campbell hit a post before a teammate scored the rebound, delivered the free kick from which Mussa Kaba headed in, and later scored himself. He threatened from the flank as a shooter, set-piece taker and supplier.
Campbell made his Bundesliga debut for Dortmund in October 2024. Later, playing for the under-23s in the third division against Erzgebirge Aue, he ran around the goalkeeper to equalise in a 3-1 win.
Campbell represented Iceland at youth level before switching to the United States in 2024. He played for the U.S. at the 2025 under-20 World Cup, starting against France and scoring a penalty against Morocco in the quarter-final. His goal brought the U.S. level at half-time, but they lost 3-1.
A loan in the second half of 2025/26 sent him from Dortmund to Hoffenheim. He then joined newly promoted Elversberg in July. Elversberg’s sporting director singled out his pace and ability to beat a defender one-on-one, qualities he has shown when carrying at opponents from wide positions.
That route produced a notable moment in Elversberg’s first Bundesliga match, against Bayer Leverkusen on 29 August 2026. Starting on the left, Campbell intercepted a loose pass from Edmond Tapsoba, drove forward and scored across goalkeeper Mark Flekken as Elversberg won 3-2. He also combined on the flank and cut inside for a blocked shot. The United States called him into its senior squad that September, and he won his first senior cap as a substitute against Canada on 6 October.
Cole Campbell currently plays for SV Elversberg as a forward. He has represented USA internationally.
