Profile
Aleix García is a midfielder who connects a team's defensive and attacking lines through his passing. He looks for space to receive from the back, then chooses whether to keep the ball moving nearby or send it into a more advanced area. His movement gives teammates an angle when opponents press; his longer passes can change where the next attack begins.
His route to that role was not a straight rise through one club. After joining Manchester City, he spent two loan seasons at Girona from 2017, followed by spells in Belgium and Romania and a move to Eibar. He returned to Girona in 2021 as a free agent. That second spell included the club's promotion to Spain's top division in 2022.
Girona then became the setting for his clearest breakthrough. García captained the side during its 2023/24 third-place finish in La Liga, which brought the club its first Champions League qualification. He could help build a move from deep without staying fixed in one spot: the same midfielder who offered a safe pass to the defence could look forward once the shape opened.
Bayer Leverkusen announced his signing from Girona in June 2024, ahead of the 2024/25 season. The club described his vision and accuracy from a holding midfield position. García said he saw similarities between Girona's football and Leverkusen's, and explained that he liked moving between defence and attack rather than being confined to a single zone.
His first Leverkusen campaign brought competition for minutes. By 2025/26, he was playing deeper in a double pivot and taking more responsibility for the tempo of possession. From there he could receive under pressure, circulate the ball and choose the moment for a longer pass. The Bundesliga's 2025/26 Team of the Season placed him in its extended selection as a reserve, an individual recognition rather than a club title.
García was first called into Spain's senior squad in November 2023. He later started the November 2025 World Cup qualifier against Türkiye and played the full match. Spain won the 2026 World Cup, but García was not in its announced 26-player tournament squad. His international appearances and the national team's tournament title are separate parts of the record.
Aleix García currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
