Profile
Ritsu Dōan is a right-sided attacker whose stronger left foot changes the defender's choice. From the wing he can drive inside to shoot; closing that route can leave space for a pass or outside run. He also competes for the ball, a habit he credits Freiburg coach Christian Streich with sharpening. The combination makes his role more varied than a winger who simply waits to shoot.
Dōan began at Gamba Osaka and moved to Groningen in 2017. PSV Eindhoven signed him in 2019, then loaned him to Arminia Bielefeld for 2020/21. That season gave him Bundesliga experience before he returned to PSV. The route crossed Dutch and German leagues before Freiburg became his longer Bundesliga stop.
At PSV he was part of the side that beat Ajax in the 2022 Dutch Cup final, entering as a substitute. Freiburg signed him that July. Dōan has said Christian Streich and Julian Schuster improved his movement and ability to find space. By 2024/25, his left-footed finishing and combination play had become important ways for Freiburg to turn possession into chances.
Frankfurt signed him from Freiburg in August 2025. In an early league win at Hoffenheim, he scored twice and set up another goal. Frankfurt's match analysis described switches of play that moved the attack quickly to his side, where he could receive on the right before the defence settled. The match showed his ability to finish one move and supply another.
For Japan, his two goals at the 2022 World Cup came in separate comebacks. He came off the bench against Germany and equalised in a 2–1 win. Introduced at half-time against Spain, he struck another equaliser from the edge of the box; Japan won 2–1 and topped its group. Neither goal was the winner, but each changed the direction of its match.
The 2026 World Cup showed his passing and positional range. Against Sweden, Dōan played behind the striker and slipped a first-time pass through for Daizen Maeda to score in a 1–1 draw that sent Japan into the Round of 32. Against Brazil on 29 June, he started at right wing-back and went off in the 66th minute. Japan led at half-time but lost 2–1, ending its tournament.
Ritsu Dōan currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt as a right winger. He has represented Japan internationally.
