Profile
Maximilian Mittelstädt is a German left-back whose game connects defending on the flank with supplying attacks. He moves forward from the defensive line and uses his left foot to find teammates from open play and set pieces. That combination makes his delivery an important part of his role, beyond simply carrying the ball up the touchline.
His route into professional football began in his home city of Berlin. He joined Hertha BSC’s academy in 2012, signed his first professional contract in 2015 and made his Bundesliga debut against Eintracht Frankfurt on 2 March 2016. Having grown up supporting Hertha, he later described playing at the Olympiastadion as the fulfilment of a childhood ambition.
Mittelstädt moved to Stuttgart in summer 2023, after Hertha’s relegation. His first season brought a different setting for his attacking work: he contributed to the Stuttgart side that qualified for the 2024/25 Champions League. The Bundesliga’s profile highlighted both his movement between defensive and attacking positions and his passing from the left.
His senior Germany breakthrough followed in March 2024. He started the friendlies against France and the Netherlands, scoring the equaliser against the Dutch. Those appearances led into a place at EURO 2024, taking him from years of youth international football to playing in a senior tournament on home soil. In May 2026, however, he was left out of Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s 26-man squad for the World Cup.
Against Hungary on 19 June 2024, his low cross supplied İlkay Gündoğan for Germany’s second goal in a 2–0 win. It was a clear example of what his forward involvement can produce: a defender becoming the provider, with a ball along the ground that a teammate could finish without an aerial contest.
Berlin also became the setting for a major club honour. Mittelstädt started Stuttgart’s 4–2 victory over Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal final on 24 May 2025. He started the following year’s final too, on 23 May 2026, when Bayern Munich won 3–0. The two appearances gave his career at the Olympiastadion a chapter beyond his Hertha beginnings.
Maximilian Mittelstädt currently plays for VfB Stuttgart as a left-back. He has represented Germany internationally.
