Profile
In a German Cup quarter-final against Wolfsburg in February 2025, Maarten Vandevoordt showed two parts of a goalkeeper's job. He saved Patrick Wimmer's near-post shot and pushed Andreas Skov Olsen's rising effort away. Later he claimed a cross and kicked long to Benjamin Šeško, whose cross gave Loïs Openda a chance that went unconverted. It was a route from a goalkeeper's catch into an attack.
His senior career had already begun in Belgium. On 10 December 2019 Vandevoordt started for Genk against Napoli in the Champions League aged 17 years and 287 days, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play from the group stage onward. Napoli won 4-0, so the record came in a demanding match. He went on to become Genk's regular goalkeeper rather than remaining a one-match curiosity.
Vandevoordt was part of Genk's Belgian Cup-winning side in 2021. Leipzig agreed his future move in April 2022, but he stayed with Genk for two more seasons before arriving in Germany in July 2024. The long interval meant he continued to play in Belgium while the next step of his career was already set.
His first Leipzig league appearance came from the bench against Freiburg in October 2024, when Péter Gulácsi went off at half-time and Leipzig came back to win. Vandevoordt then started a German Cup tie against St. Pauli three days later. In January 2025 he made his Leipzig Champions League debut in a victory over Sporting, returning to the competition in which his Genk appearance had set the age record.
The 1-0 Wolfsburg result sent Leipzig to the German Cup semi-finals. A year later, Augsburg tested Vandevoordt from the penalty spot. He dived to turn Keven Schlotterbeck's effort around the post, yet Augsburg scored later in the half before Leipzig recovered to win 2-1. The save kept a goal off the board at that moment.
In October 2024, Vandevoordt was among four players moved from Belgium's under-21 group to the senior Red Devils squad. His senior debut followed on 5 October 2026, in a 4–1 Nations League defeat by France. The 2024 call-up had come after his record-setting Champions League start for Genk but before his Leipzig debut in that competition.
Maarten Vandevoordt currently plays for RB Leipzig as a goalkeeper. He has represented Belgium internationally.
