Profile
David Raum is a German left-back whose attacking game is built around delivering the ball from the left. His speed lets him advance down the flank, but his contribution is not confined to crosses: he can also move inside and find teammates with passes through crowded areas.
That range reflects a football education further forward. Raum played in attacking positions before becoming a full-back at Greuther Fürth. In a November 2025 DFB interview, he described repeatedly practising crosses after the change and later taking set pieces. He also explained that Germany asked him to occupy more central positions during build-up.
Born in Nuremberg, Raum began playing at Tuspo Nuremberg before developing in Fürth's youth system. His progress was gradual: he reached the first team during 2016/17 and later became a regular on the left. He helped Fürth win promotion from the second division in 2021 before moving to Hoffenheim that summer.
One season at Hoffenheim brought the next step. Having established himself in the Bundesliga, Raum joined RB Leipzig in July 2022. His first season there ended in German Cup success: Leipzig beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2–0 in the June 2023 final, retaining the trophy the club had won before his arrival.
Internationally, Raum played in every match of Germany's victorious 2021 European Under-21 Championship campaign and also appeared at the Tokyo Olympics. At EURO 2024, he supplied a particularly clear example of his value from wide positions: coming off the bench against Switzerland, he crossed for Niclas Füllkrug's stoppage-time equaliser, which secured Germany first place in their group.
Leipzig appointed Raum captain in summer 2025. Discussing his Germany role that November, he emphasised physical commitment and connecting with teammates. Leadership sits alongside the less conspicuous demands of his position: he has stressed that losing a defensive one-against-one can immediately expose the team to a major chance.
Raum also played at the 2026 World Cup, starting Germany's final group match against Ecuador in June. Germany subsequently went out to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.
