Profile
Yan Diomande is an Ivorian winger whose threat comes from making a defender commit before he accelerates. His former Leganés coach Borja Jiménez described how he can stop, wait for a challenge, then escape with a feint or change of pace. Comfortable using either foot, he can attack from either flank.
Born in Abidjan, Diomande took a route through football in the United States before reaching Europe. He trained at DME Academy in Florida and played for its associated team AS Frenzi, helping them win their league in 2023. Leganés brought him to Spain in January 2025.
His breakthrough there began with a practice match against the first team in March 2025. Jiménez recalled a winger who repeatedly took on senior defenders, then showed he could combine with teammates in tight spaces. Extra work on finishing and defensive positioning accompanied his promotion. He also appeared against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu before moving to RB Leipzig in July 2025.
At Leipzig, his work without the ball mattered alongside his direct dribbling. Coach Ole Werner valued his willingness to chase possession immediately after it was lost, alongside his ability to get past opponents. Diomande won the Bundesliga's 2025/26 Rookie of the Season award.
His senior international rise brought another kind of test. After his first Côte d'Ivoire call-up in October 2025, he scored in the 3–0 Africa Cup of Nations knockout win over Burkina Faso on 6 January 2026. The tournament ended with a 3–2 quarter-final defeat by Egypt four days later.
At the 2026 World Cup, he played in Côte d'Ivoire's first appearance in the knockout rounds. Against Norway on 30 June, his work on the left produced corners and troubled the opposing full-back, but the Ivorians lost 2–1 in the round of 32.
Real Madrid announced an agreement to sign him from Leipzig on 6 August 2026. That move returned him to the Spanish league after a development path through Florida, Leganés and Germany, with his ability to beat an opponent remaining the thread connecting those stages.
