Profile
Albert Grønbæk is an attacking midfielder whose best work begins with a change of direction. He can receive between the lines, drive at a defender and then choose a shot or a pass as the defence shifts. Clubs have also used him from the left, giving him room to carry the ball inside rather than keeping him on the touchline.
He developed at AGF Aarhus before moving to Bodø/Glimt in August 2022. At the Norwegian club he became a goal threat from midfield and was part of its 2023 league title. Grønbæk later credited Bodø/Glimt with helping him grow as a player, while his performances there opened the move to France.
A February 2024 Conference League tie at Ajax showed both sides of that threat. Grønbæk put Bodø/Glimt two goals ahead: first by beating his marker and finishing low, then by combining with Håkon Evjen. Ajax recovered to draw, but the match showed how his movement and close control could create danger in a European knockout tie.
Rennes signed him in July 2024 after his rise in Norway. The French club highlighted his ability to carry the ball at speed and keep his technique while moving. His career then took a less settled route: Southampton borrowed him in January 2025, and Rennes sent him to Genoa on another loan that June.
Denmark brought him into the senior side in September 2024. He made his debut against Switzerland and scored against Serbia three days later, combining with Yussuf Poulsen before cutting through the defence. It was a national-team example of the same direct running that had made him conspicuous at club level.
Hamburg first brought Grønbæk in on loan from Rennes in January 2026 and completed a permanent move in June. In a May win at Eintracht Frankfurt, he scored an equaliser and then lifted a pass into Fábio Vieira's path for the winner. The two actions captured his range: arriving to finish a move and spotting a teammate's run soon afterwards.
His September 2026 display against Cologne offered another version of that creativity. A corner from the left found Nicolás Capaldo at the far post; later, Grønbæk crossed for Yussuf Poulsen to score. Set pieces, deliveries from wide areas and carries through the inside channel give him several ways to turn possession into a chance.
Albert Grønbæk currently plays for Hamburger SV as a midfielder. He has represented Denmark internationally.
