Profile
Elia Caprile is an Italian goalkeeper whose game combines quick reactions with involvement in the first pass out of defence. He can come off his line to meet high or low balls, then use his feet to help build an attack or restart it quickly. That gives his role a purpose beyond the save itself.
Concentration is another part of his method. In a May 2025 interview, Caprile explained that he talks continually to stay involved even when play is far away. He also described the need to control the excitement of a good save and the frustration of a mistake, so neither distracts him from the next action.
Born in Verona, he developed in Chievo's youth system before joining Leeds United in January 2020. He played for the Leeds under-23 side that won the Premier League 2 Division 2 title in 2020/21. A loan to Pro Patria in August 2021 then took him into senior football in Italy's third tier.
Bari brought him into Serie B for 2022/23, a season that ended in defeat by Cagliari in the promotion play-off final. Napoli signed him in July 2023 and immediately loaned him to Empoli, where he made his Serie A debut that August. His route to the top division therefore ran through regular football at successive levels of the Italian game.
He returned to Napoli and made his debut for the club in a goalless draw at Juventus in September 2024. A January 2025 loan to Cagliari reunited him with Davide Nicola, his former Empoli coach. His Cagliari debut was a 1–1 draw at Milan; in June 2025 the club announced that it had made the transfer permanent.
Italy had already used him at under-18 and under-21 level before his first senior squad call-up in November 2025. He was selected again for the March 2026 World Cup play-offs. Italy's campaign ended with defeat on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving the team outside the finals. For Caprile, the senior invitations followed a development path that had begun in youth internationals.
Elia Caprile currently plays for Cagliari as a goalkeeper.
