Overview

Cagliari in brief

Founded in 1920, Cagliari represent Sardinia's capital and carry an island-wide significance unusual in Italian club football. Known as Gli Isolani, or the Islanders, they wear red and blue and use the four Moors of the Sardinian flag in their crest. The club play at Unipol Domus, built beside the former Stadio Sant'Elia site and designed to retain a close connection between the team and its support.

Cagliari's defining achievement is the 1969-70 Serie A title, won under Manlio Scopigno by a disciplined side that conceded only 11 league goals. Led in attack by Gigi Riva, they became the first club from south of Rome to win the Italian championship and gave Sardinia a powerful national symbol. The club have also won Serie B and Serie C titles, reflecting repeated returns from the lower divisions.
