Profile
Jonathan David is a Canadian forward whose movement connects goalscoring with the work of the attackers around him. He seeks the ball in different parts of the pitch, drawing defenders away from their positions and opening room for teammates, while remaining comfortable finishing close to goal.
That mobility gives him more than one role in an attack. He can lead the line himself or work alongside a striker who stays more centrally positioned. His ability to combine with teammates helps explain why leaving the penalty area can be part of his attacking contribution, rather than simply taking him away from chances.
Born in Brooklyn, David spent his early childhood in Haiti before moving to Ottawa at six. His football education included Gloucester Dragons, Ottawa Gloucester and Ottawa Internationals. He joined Gent in 2018 and scored on his senior debut for the Belgian club that August, beginning his professional career in Europe.
Gent gave him an early breakthrough as a scorer. In the 2019–20 Belgian league, he shared the leading scorer award with Dieumerci Mbokani, each finishing with 18 goals. He then moved to Lille in August 2020, taking the next step from Belgian football into the French top flight.
His first Lille season ended with the 2020–21 Ligue 1 title, to which he contributed 13 league goals. He also won the 2021 Trophée des Champions with the club.
After five seasons at Lille, David joined Juventus in July 2025. A further move followed in 2026: Juventus announced his loan to Atlético de Madrid on 1 September, extending a European career that had begun in Belgium and developed in France.
David's international breakthrough came quickly too: he scored twice on his senior Canada debut in September 2018 and led the scoring at the 2019 Gold Cup with six goals. At the 2026 World Cup, he scored a hat-trick against Qatar in Canada's first men's World Cup victory, a 6–0 win. Canada reached the last 16 before losing 3–0 to Morocco on 4 July. His scoring milestone belonged to a campaign that established new territory for the national team.
Jonathan David currently plays for Atletico Madrid as a striker. He has represented Canada internationally.
