Profile
Éderson José dos Santos Lourenço da Silva is a Brazilian central midfielder who links defensive pressure to attacking support. His running lets him close down an opponent's passing option, then join the next phase when his team has the ball. That combination matters in a system that asks midfielders to defend individual opponents without losing the ability to advance.
He developed at Desportivo Brasil before playing for Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Fortaleza. The move to Italy came in January 2022, when he joined Salernitana. It was a short but important step: Salernitana avoided relegation that season, and his goals against Sampdoria and Atalanta were part of the points they collected during the escape.
Atalanta signed him permanently from Salernitana in July 2022. The club described a midfielder able to combine sustained running with forward movement, rather than someone confined to shielding the defence. His later goal against Genoa in October 2023 offers a concrete example: he finished a counterattack in stoppage time after Atalanta had recovered the ball at the other end.
The clearest view of his defensive role came in the 2024 Europa League final. Éderson started alongside Teun Koopmeiners as Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3–0 on 22 May. UEFA's technical analysis explains how the pair stayed close to Granit Xhaka and Exequiel Palacios, making it difficult for Leverkusen to play through their usual central connections.
This was coordinated pressure, not simply a midfielder chasing the ball. Atalanta accepted one-against-one matchups across the pitch; their central players had to follow opponents while the defenders behind them judged when to step forward. Éderson's work helped restrict the time available for Leverkusen's build-up, leaving Lookman's three goals to decide the final.
Brazil called him into its 2026 World Cup squad in June. He made his tournament debut as a substitute against Haiti on 19 June. He also came on against Norway in the round of 16 on 5 July, when Brazil lost 2–1 and were eliminated.
Éderson currently plays for Atalanta as a midfielder. He has represented Brazil internationally.
