Career & playing style
Marco Carnesecchi is an Italian goalkeeper whose close-range reactions are a useful starting point for understanding his game. A header from nearby or a rebound can leave a goalkeeper little time to respond, and saves in those situations have provided clear examples of his shot-stopping.
Atalanta highlighted two such interventions when he won their March 2024 Player of the Month vote. He stopped Riccardo Calafiori's header from close range against Bologna, then denied Victor Osimhen's follow-up after a shot from Stanislav Lobotka against Napoli. Those examples show the value of reacting to the next action while an attack is still unfolding.
Born in Rimini, Carnesecchi developed in Cesena's youth system before joining Atalanta's Primavera side, with whom he won the 2018/19 youth championship. His route into senior football then took him away from Bergamo: Atalanta announced a loan to Trapani in July 2019 and another to Cremonese in January 2021.
Cremonese gave that development a tangible team milestone. He helped the club earn promotion from Serie B in 2021/22, when they finished second behind Lecce, and stayed to experience Serie A. The sequence took him from youth football through the second division to top-flight matches before his return to Atalanta in summer 2023.
That return brought him into the squad that won the 2023/24 Europa League. Carnesecchi was an unused substitute in the final, with Juan Musso in goal as Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3–0 in Dublin on 22 May 2024 through Ademola Lookman's hat-trick.
Individual recognition followed in June 2026, when Atalanta announced Carnesecchi as their 2025/26 Lete Player of the Season. Supporters chose the winner through the club's official app, adding a season award to the monthly recognition he had received from the same fan base.
His international pathway also reached Italy's senior squad. For the March 2026 World Cup play-offs, the federation named him in a four-goalkeeper group alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma, Elia Caprile and Alex Meret.
