Profile
Career & playing style
Riccardo Orsolini is a left-footed right winger who can make one starting position lead to two different attacks. He can stay wide to face a defender directly, or move inside according to a full-back's position. His sharp change of direction creates room for the left-footed shot that became his signature. He has also worked on a right-footed cross, another response when a defender blocks the route inside.
He grew up in the Ascoli area and worked through the club's youth ranks into its first team. After a senior debut in 2015, he established himself in Serie B during 2016/17. Juventus bought him in January 2017 and sent him to Atalanta on loan later that year, where he first played in Serie A and the Europa League. A January 2018 loan then took him to Bologna.
The 2017 Under-20 World Cup gave his direct style an international stage. Orsolini scored five times as Italy finished third, and he received the tournament's Golden Boot as its leading scorer. He made his senior Italy debut against Armenia on 18 November 2019 and scored in the 9–1 win.
At Bologna, the choice between holding width and coming inside became part of a longer career rather than a brief breakthrough. He contributed to the side that finished fifth in Serie A in 2023/24 and qualified for the next Champions League. He then played in the 2024/25 competition, a new stage for a player whose earlier European debut had come on loan at Atalanta.
His most tangible team honour came in the 2024/25 Coppa Italia. Orsolini scored in the first leg of Bologna's semi-final against Empoli, and started the final against Milan on 14 May 2025. Bologna won 1–0 through Dan Ndoye's goal, ending a 51-year wait for the trophy.
The cup win also led Bologna into the 2025/26 Europa League. Orsolini scored against Freiburg in October 2025, Salzburg in November and Maccabi Tel Aviv in January 2026. Bologna reached the quarter-finals before losing to Aston Villa in April. The winger had progressed from a one-on-one prospect at Ascoli to repeated European involvement.
