Profile
Nikola Vlašić is an attacking midfielder who links build-up to finishing. He moves across the line behind a striker, finds a pocket to receive, and turns that touch into a direct attack. A UEFA technical observer highlighted his movement and willingness to penetrate after Croatia's Euro 2020 win over Scotland.
His senior story began at hometown club Hajduk Split. Torino's account says he made his professional and Europa League debuts in the 2014/15 season and scored on his European debut. Hajduk later trusted the teenager with the captaincy. By August 2017 he had moved to Everton, carrying unusual experience for a player still in his teens.
His opportunities at Everton were limited, but a move to CSKA Moscow in 2018 brought a different stage. In October that year, he scored in the second minute as CSKA beat reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid 1–0. He returned to England with West Ham in 2021.
Torino borrowed Vlašić from West Ham in August 2022, then made the move permanent in August 2023. His route through Croatia, England, Russia and Italy has asked him to adapt his attacking midfield work to several leagues. The recurring problem for defenders is where to pick him up between midfield and the last line.
For Croatia, a defining tournament contribution came against Scotland at Euro 2020, played in June 2021. Starting across the front line, he met Bruno Petković's lay-off and scored the opener in a 3–1 win that took Croatia into the round of 16. UEFA named him its player of the match. His movement had produced a finish inside the box, not merely a passage of possession.
He was in Croatia's 2022 World Cup squad when the side beat Morocco to finish third. That was a team finish, not an individual award. At the 2026 World Cup, he started against Ghana and scored Croatia's late winner in a 2–1 group-stage victory. He also featured in the round-of-32 loss to Portugal, which ended Croatia's tournament.
Nikola Vlašić currently plays for Torino as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Croatia internationally.
