Profile
Lautaro Martínez is an Argentine striker who combines penalty-area finishing with the work of linking an attack. He moves towards the ball, protects it with his body and brings nearby team-mates into the move. That gives his side a way forward even when defenders are close enough to challenge immediately.
Born in Bahía Blanca on 22 August 1997, he began at local club Liniers before developing at Racing Club. His first-team debut in November 2015 came as a substitute for Diego Milito, the former Inter striker. Martínez followed that route to Milan himself when he joined Inter in July 2018.
His first Italian league title came in 2020/21, after a second season at Inter that had brought 21 goals in all competitions and a Europa League final. In 2023/24, he captained another Serie A title-winning side and finished as the competition’s leading scorer with 24 league goals.
With Argentina, he was part of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad. At the 2024 Copa América, his contribution was decisive: he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, including the extra-time winner against Colombia in the final.
The 2025/26 season brought another Serie A scoring title, this time with 17 goals, as Inter won the league and Coppa Italia. At the 2026 World Cup, Martínez’s winning header against England helped Argentina reach the final; they finished runners-up to Spain.
His influence also appears in attacks he does not finish. In the 2023 Champions League semi-final against Milan, he let a pass run through to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, wrong-footing a defender before his team-mate scored. Against Bayern in April 2025, UEFA highlighted a different connection: Martínez stayed close to Marcus Thuram, received his pass and sent him running behind the defence. His positioning makes him both a target for the first pass and a link to the next runner.
Lautaro Martínez currently plays for Inter as a striker. He has represented Argentina internationally.
