Profile
Nicolò Barella is an Italian midfielder who helps turn defensive work into attacks. His game combines challenges for loose balls with quick forward passes and runs from midfield into space behind defenders. That combination gives him ways to influence a move both with and without possession.
Born in Cagliari on 7 February 1997, he attended the Gigi Riva football school and developed in Cagliari’s youth teams. A loan to Como gave him his first experience away from Sardinia, before he returned to establish himself with his hometown club and wear its captain’s armband.
Barella later described Como as a difficult but valuable stage in his development: the team were relegated, yet adapting to life away from home helped him grow. In July 2019, he joined Inter from Cagliari, initially on loan with an obligation to buy.
With Inter, he won Serie A in 2020/21, 2023/24 and 2025/26. He also helped the club reach Champions League finals in 2023 and 2025. The latter ended in a 5–0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
For Italy, he was part of the side that won EURO 2020, played in 2021. He opened the scoring in the 2–1 quarter-final victory over Belgium, moving past two challenges before shooting, and started the final against England, which Italy won on penalties.
His quick use of a regained ball appeared again in the March 2026 World Cup play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina: he collected a goalkeeper’s clearance and supplied Moise Kean’s opening goal. Italy nevertheless missed the tournament after losing the penalty shootout.
UEFA’s analysis of Inter’s September 2024 draw with Manchester City shows another part of his range. Barella dropped deeper as defenders moved forward, helped pass through City’s lines and carried the ball upfield. Against Milan in the 2023 semi-final, UEFA also highlighted his runs beyond the defence and his ability to win possession and immediately start a counterattack. He can help a team escape pressure as well as arrive at the end of a move.
Nicolò Barella currently plays for Inter as a central midfielder. He has represented Italy internationally.
