Profile
Career & playing style
Jean Butez's goalkeeping often starts with a decision about the next pass. At Como, he has been asked to receive the ball under pressure, wait for an opponent to commit and play through the space that opens. The point is to give teammates a way out of a press, rather than merely clear danger.
His route to that role was gradual. Born in Lille, Butez began at FC Merris before entering Lille's academy. He spent years in its youth and reserve sides without making a first-team debut. A 2017–18 loan to Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium finally gave him regular senior football; he later joined Mouscron permanently. Butez has described that period as an education in handling mistakes and the responsibility of being a first-choice goalkeeper.
Royal Antwerp signed him in 2020. He became their regular goalkeeper as the club won the Belgian league and cup in 2022–23, then added the Super Cup at the start of 2023–24. His Antwerp years also brought Champions League football: he was in goal for the December 2023 win over Barcelona.
Butez joined Como from Antwerp in January 2025. His early test against Lazio illustrated the change in demands. Cesc Fàbregas said afterwards that playing out while opponents pressed man to man was difficult for a goalkeeper with little preparation, but praised Butez's reactions, movement off his line and use of his feet. The passing role is therefore more than a stylistic flourish: it helps Como move the ball beyond the first wave of pressure.
There were defining moments at both ends of the pitch in 2026. Butez saved a penalty in Como's January win at Pisa. He was in goal when a May victory at Verona secured the club's first European qualification, and again for its Champions League debut, a September win over RB Leipzig. The club's account of his distribution stresses the same balance: he must protect the goal while also helping start attacks.
France called Butez into its 2026–27 Nations League squad after Robin Risser withdrew. From Lille's reserves to Mouscron, Antwerp and then Como, his career has paired the traditional demands of goalkeeping with a growing role in possession.
