Profile
Nico Paz is an Argentine attacking midfielder born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 8 September 2004. The son of former Argentina defender Pablo Paz, he developed in Spanish youth football before building a senior career around creating chances and threatening goal himself.
After youth spells with San Juan and Tenerife, Paz joined Real Madrid's academy in 2016 and progressed to Castilla. He made his first-team debut in November 2023. Later that month, his first senior Madrid goal came against Napoli in the Champions League: a left-footed strike from outside the penalty area. He was part of Madrid's 2024 Champions League-winning squad.
His move to Como in August 2024 gave that development a different setting under Cesc Fàbregas. Paz later described the step from Madrid's youth football to Serie A as difficult at first. The challenge was to apply his technique against established senior opponents, with regular opportunities to shape an attack.
Paz can move a defence in more than one way. He passes through gaps with his left foot, accelerates past opponents with the ball and shoots from distance. Those options make him difficult to contain: a defender stepping towards the ball must also account for the pass beyond him.
In his first two Italian seasons under Fàbregas, Paz's role also extended to winning possession back. Serie A's analysis describes him combining with teammates in the build-up and pressing high after turnovers. That work connected his attacking freedom to Como's collective approach, helping the team contest the ball close to where its attacks broke down.
The progression brought individual awards. Paz was Serie A's Best Under-23 Player for 2024/25, then its Best Midfielder for 2025/26. Those honours marked two stages of his breakthrough in Italy, from a first full top-flight campaign to recognition across the league's midfielders.
His Argentina senior debut came against Bolivia on 15 October 2024, when he assisted Lionel Messi in a 6–0 win. At his first World Cup in 2026, he came on against Algeria and made his first tournament start against Jordan. He was an unused substitute in the final, which Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain after extra time.
