Career & playing style
Assane Diao is a forward who learned his football in Spain after being born in Senegal. He can start wide, then run into open space rather than waiting for the ball at his feet. Diao has described himself as an outside player who looks for space and is also comfortable moving closer to the penalty area. That movement lets him offer a team both width and a direct route towards goal.
He joined Real Betis's under-19 side in summer 2021 and progressed through Betis Deportivo. His first-team debut came against Rangers in Glasgow on 21 September 2023. That step brought his direct attacking game into senior football after a route through the youth and reserve teams.
An international title came with Spain's under-19 team. In the European Under-19 Championship final on 28 July 2024, he came off the bench against France and scored one minute later on a counterattack. Spain won 2-0. It was a team title in a match he played and influenced, rather than an individual award. The goal also illustrated the value of a forward ready to attack open space immediately after a turnover.
In January 2025 he moved from Betis to Como. Diao said a conversation with coach Cesc Fàbregas helped him choose the club, and he adapted quickly to Italy's top division. Fàbregas highlighted his speed and ability to find space without the ball. Diao's own account adds a useful detail: he prefers to start outside but can move into a central striker's position when the play calls for it.
After representing Spain at youth level, Diao made his senior Senegal debut against Sudan in March 2025. That changed the international shirt on his career record; it did not erase the Spain under-19 title. He was selected for Senegal's 2026 World Cup squad and appeared as a substitute in the group-stage win over Iraq on 26 June. The distinction matters because selection alone would not establish that he played at the tournament.
His club career gained another European milestone in September 2026. In Como's first Champions League match, against RB Leipzig, Diao scored after the interval on a counterattack in a 4-1 win. It was a high-profile example of the same pattern visible in his youth final: begin from a forward position, recognise the space a defence leaves, and arrive quickly enough to finish the move.
