Profile
Esteban Lepaul is a French centre-forward whose game depends on finding room to finish. In a May 2026 interview, he explained that wrestling with defenders would waste his strengths: intelligent movement and well-chosen runs offer a better route to goal. His job is to arrive where he can shoot, even when space is tight.
That approach has developed alongside his technique. Lepaul told young Angers supporters that he had dribbled more as a youngster before concentrating on attacking and finishing. He also described working to improve his heading, having previously been more comfortable jumping and flicking the ball on than directing it into the net.
His route to the top division passed through several levels of French football. After early football in Alsace and time in Lyon’s academy, he was not retained by Lyon and joined Épinal in National 2 in 2020. Two seasons at Orléans followed before he returned to Épinal in 2023, this time in National.
Angers signed him in January 2024, and he shared in their promotion to Ligue 1 later that year. His first league appearance at the highest level, away to Lille, remained a particularly meaningful memory when he spoke to supporters. He described it as the reward for years of preparation and sacrifice, rather than an ordinary substitute appearance.
In August 2025 he joined Rennes. His first season there ended with the 2025/26 Ligue 1 top-scorer award, an individual distinction that marked how far he had travelled from the lower divisions. During that campaign he played both alongside another striker and alone through the middle, retaining the same emphasis on getting into scoring positions.
A further milestone arrived in September 2026, when he made his senior France debut as a late substitute against Türkiye in the Nations League. He then made his first international start against Belgium. Both matches ended in 1–0 France victories, adding an international chapter to a career built through academy football and the lower leagues.
