Profile
Career & playing style
Pavel Šulc is a Czech attacker whose position can change without removing him from the decisive part of a move. He made his name behind a striker at Viktoria Plzeň, yet Lyon have also used him across the forward line. That range matters because he can either help connect an attack or arrive close enough to finish it.
His route to the first team was gradual. Šulc joined Plzeň as a child, developed in its academy and spent several spells away, including one at Jablonec. Back at Viktoria, he became a regular in 2023/24. The club reached the Europa Conference League quarter-finals that season, giving him a European stage as well as domestic minutes.
The next campaign turned that progress into recognition. Plzeň finished second in the 2024/25 Czech league, while Šulc won the league association's player-of-the-season award. He then received the Czech Golden Ball, a separate award decided by journalists. Those were individual honours, not titles for the team; his Plzeň league title came in 2021/22.
Šulc moved from Plzeň to Lyon in August 2025. In France, his work broadened from the familiar number-ten role to positions along the front line. An early Lyon league match against Metz showed the creative side: starting on the right, he set up Malick Fofana's opener. Playing wider can change where he receives the ball, but it does not make him merely a touchline winger.
His attacking threat also comes from the space just outside the penalty area. In Czechia's World Cup play-off against Denmark on 31 March 2026, he struck from the edge of the box after three minutes. Czechia eventually won on penalties and qualified for the finals. The goal illustrates how a player associated with supplying forwards can become the shooter when he reaches the front of an attack.
Šulc had been named in Czechia's Euro 2024 squad, which by itself does not establish how much he played there. He appeared in all three of Czechia's 2026 World Cup group games, before the team exited after a defeat by Mexico. His career therefore links a long Czech development path with a move to Ligue 1 and a concrete role in his country's return to the World Cup.
