Profile
Fabián Ruiz is a Spanish midfielder whose passing is closely linked to where he receives the ball. Left-footed, he can operate ahead of a holding midfielder or drop alongside one. That movement gives his team another route through pressure and forces opponents to reconsider their marking.
Born in Los Palacios y Villafranca, he developed in Real Betis’s academy and made his professional debut in the 2014–15 season. After a half-season loan at Elche in 2017, he established himself back at Betis before moving to Napoli in 2018.
The Italian spell brought Coppa Italia success in 2020, while international recognition had already arrived. He was named player of the tournament at the 2019 European Under-21 Championship, scoring the opening goal against Germany in the final as Spain won the title.
He joined Paris Saint-Germain in August 2022. His contribution there included decisive finishing: in May 2024, he scored in the 2–1 Coupe de France final victory over Lyon.
That summer’s European Championship offered a particularly clear example of his tactical value. In the final against England, he dropped beside Martín Zubimendi after half-time. UEFA’s observers explained how that deeper pairing opened space further forward; Ruiz’s pass to Dani Carvajal then helped build the move for Spain’s first goal in a 2–1 win.
Ruiz subsequently started both of PSG’s consecutive Champions League final victories: the 5–0 defeat of Inter in May 2025 and the penalty-shootout win over Arsenal after a 1–1 draw in May 2026. He shared the midfield with Vitinha and João Neves in both finals.
On 19 July 2026, he also started Spain’s World Cup final against Argentina, having scored against Belgium in the quarter-finals. He was replaced by Pedri before Spain secured a 1–0 victory after extra time, adding the world title to his European Championship success.
Fabián Ruiz currently plays for Paris Saint Germain as a midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
