Profile
Aleksandr Golovin is a Russian midfielder whose attacking game combines passing with a threat from outside the penalty area. The right-footer has explained that he practises curling shots to find a way past teams defending with many players behind the ball: when the route into the box is crowded, he can attack the goal from farther out.
His creativity also works from deeper positions. In March 2024, Monaco used him alongside Youssouf Fofana in central midfield, where he could see the play ahead and distribute the ball. At Metz, his cross to the far post found Vanderson for a volley, turning a delivery across the defence into a first-time shooting chance.
Born in Kaltan in Siberia, Golovin learned his football at the Metallurg-Kuzbass academy before joining CSKA Moscow in 2012. His early experience included futsal. He made his senior CSKA debut in a Russian Cup match in September 2014, with his first top-flight appearance following in 2015.
International youth football was another part of that development: he won the European Under-17 Championship with Russia in 2013. He then scored in each of his first two senior international appearances. At club level, he became a Russian league champion with CSKA in 2016, before his career took him to France.
The 2018 World Cup put several parts of his game into one match. In the opening 5–0 win over Saudi Arabia, he supplied crosses from opposite sides for Yuri Gazinsky and Artem Dzyuba to score, then curled in a free-kick himself. His pressing also helped Russia recover possession. The hosts went on to reach the quarter-finals.
Golovin joined Monaco in July 2018. The transition demanded patience: in a December 2023 interview, he recalled finding his first two years difficult while adapting to a new country and league. That account gives context to a development shaped by learning a different football environment as well as refining his passing and shooting.
His set-piece threat remained visible in September 2026. Captaining Russia in a friendly against Iran, he scored twice in a 2–0 win, including a right-footed free-kick from outside the box. It was another example of the shooting option that complements his work as a creator.
