Profile
Gauthier Hein is a left-footed attacking midfielder who changes an attack by finding room between the opposition's midfield and defence. He can begin on the right and move inside, or play directly behind a striker. Receiving in those pockets lets him choose a pass, combine at speed or turn towards goal; his quick first steps help him make space before a defender closes.
Born in Thionville, Hein entered the FC Metz academy and reached the club's senior side. Loans to Tours and Valenciennes gave him further football in France's second tier before he joined Auxerre in 2020. At Auxerre, his attacking play gained a more prominent stage.
At Auxerre, Hein helped win promotion to Ligue 1 in both 2022 and 2024. In the 2023/24 campaign, he operated as the number 10 in Christophe Pélissier's 4-2-3-1 as Auxerre won the Ligue 2 title. His ability to carry the ball through a small gap and then create or finish an attack was central to that role. The players' union named him Ligue 2 Player of the Season in 2024, an individual award alongside the club's team title.
Hein returned to his formative club, Metz, in August 2024, moving to Ligue 2 just after Auxerre had gone up. In the May 2025 playoff against Reims, he used a backheel to release Alpha Touré for one extra-time goal, then scored a long-range lob in Metz's 3-1 second-leg win. Metz earned the place in Ligue 1.
Metz's 2025/26 top-flight season ended in relegation, but Hein still supplied different kinds of attacking contribution. At Le Havre in April 2026, his delivery set up an early header, and he later scored from a penalty and a header in a 4-4 draw. The match shows why describing him only as a passer misses part of his game: he can create from a wide delivery and arrive to finish himself.
Nice announced his arrival in August 2026. The move followed spells in both divisions. What connects those stages is the space he seeks: he is most useful when allowed to leave a fixed wide lane, receive facing play and link the next action to a teammate's run.
Gauthier Hein currently plays for Nice as an attacking midfielder.
