Profile
Adrien Thomasson is a French midfielder whose game connects sustained running with the ability to build attacks. Starting deeper lets him receive the ball more often, help move it forward and then arrive in the penalty area from behind the attack. He has described repeated high-intensity runs and winning possession back as parts of the same role, combining attacking involvement with defensive work.
Born in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Thomasson developed through Annecy and Évian Thonon Gaillard. His route included a season on loan at Vannes in 2013/14 before returning to Évian. That move gave him a full season of senior football in the National, a step between his early Ligue 1 appearances and establishing himself at the higher level.
He joined Nantes in 2015, describing himself as an attacking midfielder who preferred working centrally and enjoyed setting up teammates. Three seasons there preceded his move to Strasbourg in 2018. With Strasbourg he won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2019, adding a team trophy to a career built across several French clubs.
A January 2023 move to Lens brought an advanced role in Franck Haise's attack, operating behind Loïs Openda alongside Florian Sotoca. Lens finished second in Ligue 1 that season. On 3 October 2023, Thomasson scored the equaliser in their 2–1 Champions League victory over Arsenal, a defining moment in his first campaign in the competition.
His Lens role subsequently changed. Will Still moved him into central midfield in 2024/25, where his work in a midfield pair combined creating chances with regaining possession. Under Pierre Sage he explained the attraction of joining defence to attack: he could help construct moves without giving up the forward runs that had characterised his attacking midfield play.
On 22 May 2026, Thomasson started as captain when Lens beat Nice 3–1 in the Coupe de France final. It was the club's first victory in the competition. The occasion gave his later Lens years a different landmark from the Arsenal goal: leading a team to a domestic cup triumph.
Rennes announced his signing on 28 May 2026. The move reunited him with Haise after their time together at Lens, while also returning him to a region he had first experienced during his Vannes loan. His career had come to encompass both playing close to the forwards and directing attacks from deeper midfield.
