Profile
Nestory Irankunda is an Australian attacker who can play wide or centrally. His main weapon is the first burst after a forward pass: he runs beyond a defender before the back line is set, then finishes while moving at speed. He also strikes a dead ball cleanly. Both routes have produced important goals.
He came through Adelaide Croatia Raiders and Adelaide United, earning an A-League debut as a teenager. In March 2024 he scored three times against Western United to become the youngest hat-trick scorer in A-League Men history. His finishes were a first-time shot, a touch onto a through ball and a close-range header. His threat was already more varied than a sprint down the touchline.
Adelaide agreed his move to Bayern Munich in November 2023, with the transfer set for July 2024. In Germany he played for Bayern's second team, then spent part of 2025 on loan at Grasshopper in Switzerland. Those stops took him through German reserve and Swiss senior competition.
Watford signed him from Bayern in July 2025 for the Championship. His first Watford goal, against Swansea City, was a long-range free kick. It showed another problem for defenders: a foul outside the box could leave him a shooting chance. He spent 2025/26 at the English club before moving on.
Australia first used him at senior level against Bangladesh in June 2024; days later he scored a penalty against Palestine for his first international goal. In March 2026 he scored twice against Curaçao in the FIFA Series and received the individual Player of the Tournament award for the Australian leg.
At the 2026 World Cup he turned a run behind Türkiye's defence into Australia's opening goal of a 2-0 win. Football Australia's tournament review calls him the Socceroos' youngest World Cup scorer. He also started the round-of-32 match against Egypt, which Australia lost on penalties. Against Egypt he led the line rather than starting wide.
Sporting CP signed him from Watford in August 2026. The club introduced him as a winger, while Irankunda said he was comfortable across the attack. His career shows a consistent idea in several roles: attack space early, then use a quick finish or powerful strike before defenders recover.
Nestory Irankunda currently plays for Sporting CP as a forward. He has represented Australia internationally.
