Profile
Konstantinos Karetsas is a left-footed attacking midfielder whose game connects close control with the pass that opens a defence. Comfortable behind a striker and also used on the right wing, he can take on an opponent in a small space before finding a teammate. The dribble and the release are linked parts of his creativity.
Born in Genk to Greek parents, Karetsas developed in his hometown club’s academy before spending part of his youth career at Anderlecht. His return brought him back to familiar surroundings: Genk’s announcement called him ‘Kos’ and described a number ten who used space intelligently and looked to play forward. Jong Genk then provided his route into senior football.
He made his Belgian second-division debut in August 2023 and subsequently progressed into Genk’s first team. Under Thorsten Fink, the 2024/25 season became an important stage in that development. Fink’s assessment joined two qualities together: the ability to beat a player and the ability to deliver the final pass. That combination explains his role as a creator near the opposition penalty area.
His first senior appearances for Greece in March 2025 made those qualities visible internationally. Against Scotland in Piraeus, his cross found Christos Tzolis at the far post, where the chance ended against the woodwork. In the return at Hampden, Karetsas released the overlapping Georgios Vagiannidis during the move for Greece’s opener, then curled in a first-time left-footed finish in a 3–0 win.
Those were different ways of affecting an attack: supplying a runner outside him, delivering from wide and finishing from the right of the box. Despite their Nations League breakthrough, Greece missed the 2026 World Cup after finishing third in their qualifying group.
At club level, Karetsas played in Genk’s run to the Europa League round of 16 in 2025/26, including the first leg against Freiburg. He moved to Borussia Dortmund in August 2026. Dortmund’s sporting director Ole Book highlighted his speed of thought in crowded attacking areas, describing a practical part of his game: finding an answer before the space closes.
