Profile
David Larrubia Romano is a left-footed attacking midfielder developed at Málaga. He can play behind a striker or begin on the right, where a carry infield can bring him into shooting range. Match reports also show him combining with teammates, so his threat is not limited to taking the final shot himself.
He joined Málaga's academy from Roma Luz in 2012, while still in the alevín age group. After progressing through the youth sides and Atlético Malagueño, he made his senior Málaga league debut away to Tenerife on 13 September 2020. He was still eligible for the club's youth team.
Málaga sent him on loan to AD Mérida for the 2022/23 Primera Federación season. He returned to Málaga in 2023 with senior football away from his home club behind him. The route combined youth development, an early Segunda debut and a loan before his role in Málaga's next promotion campaign.
In May 2024, he started against Antequera and scored after taking time to set a low shot inside the area; he also helped create Málaga's third goal. Málaga won promotion to Segunda the following month. Dioni and Antoñito Cordero scored the decisive goals in the final against Nàstic, distinct from Larrubia's earlier campaign contribution.
Back in Segunda, Larrubia scored his first goal in the division against Eibar during 2024/25. He found space near goal and finished a move begun on Málaga's left. It was an example of how a player known for dribbling can arrive at the end of an attack too.
The 2025/26 season showed his one-against-one game at greater scale. Málaga credits him with 110 successful dribbles in 39 regular-season Segunda appearances, the most in the division, and ten league goals. At Zaragoza, his move from the right into a central shooting position forced a save; Chupe scored from the rebound. The move illustrates how his carry could help produce a goal even when someone else took the final shot.
Málaga reached the promotion playoff final against Almería in June 2026. Larrubia started the second leg and scored after Chupe's pass as Málaga won 2–1, securing a return to Spain's top division. His goal was one moment in a team achievement. Across the climb, his distinctive contribution was turning possession from the right or between the lines into a direct threat.
David Larrubia currently plays for Malaga as an attacking midfielder.
