Overview
Founded in 1948 as Club Atletico Malagueno and renamed Malaga CF in 1994, Malaga carry forward the city's blue-and-white football tradition. The club are known as Los Boquerones, a reference to the anchovies associated with the Costa del Sol city. Home matches are played at La Rosaleda, the municipal stadium opened in 1941 that also served the predecessor club CD Malaga before becoming the home of the present organisation.
Malaga won Segunda Division in 1998-99, Segunda Division B the season before, and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002. The Intertoto success began a European run that reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, while Manuel Pellegrini's team advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013. Those sides were associated with composed possession, technical attacking players and an ability to compete beyond the club's domestic standing.
