Overview

FC St. Gallen in brief

FC St. Gallen was founded on 19 April 1879 by young merchants who had learned the game from English schoolmates at the Institut Schonberg in Rorschach. The club is the oldest football club still in existence in Switzerland. The team plays in green and white. The nickname 'Espen' comes from the Espenmoos, the club's ground from 1910 to 2008. Since 2008 St. Gallen has played at a new stadium in the west of the city. It opened as the AFG Arena, was called Kybunpark from 2016 and has been the Berit Sitterstadion since July 2026.

St. Gallen won the Swiss championship in 1903-04, and its second title came 96 years later, in 1999-2000, under coach Marcel Koller. The club won the Swiss Cup in 1969, beating Bellinzona 2-0, and again in 2026, beating Stade Lausanne-Ouchy 3-0 in the final. It also won the Swiss League Cup in 1978. Between those high points, St. Gallen was relegated several times, including in 1932, 1957 (to the third tier), 2008 and 2011. In the 2000-01 UEFA Cup it knocked out Chelsea, and it reached the Europa League group stage in 2013-14. The club finished second in the league in 2019-20 and 2025-26.
