Overview

Millwall in brief

Founded in 1885 as Millwall Rovers by workers at J.T. Morton's canning factory on the Isle of Dogs, Millwall took their name from that corner of east London. In 1910 the club moved to the Den at Cold Blow Lane in New Cross, and since 1993 they have played at The Den in Bermondsey, south-east London. Known as the Lions, and earlier as the Dockers, Millwall traditionally wear blue shirts with white shorts.

Millwall won the Second Division in 1987-88 to reach the top flight for the first time, and their tenth place in the First Division in 1988-89 remains the club's highest league finish. They have also won three third-tier titles, in 1928, 1938 and 2001, the Fourth Division in 1962 and two Southern League championships in the 1890s. In 2004 Millwall reached the FA Cup final, losing 3-0 to Manchester United in Cardiff, which brought a first European campaign in the 2004-05 UEFA Cup.
