Overview

Middlesbrough in brief

Founded in 1876, Middlesbrough represent the Teesside town of the same name and are one of the oldest league clubs in England and Wales. Known as Boro, they have worn red shirts since 1899, usually with white detailing such as a chest band. Middlesbrough play at the Riverside Stadium, their home since 1995, after 92 years at Ayresome Park.

Middlesbrough won their first major trophy in 2004, beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the League Cup final under Steve McClaren, and reached the 2006 UEFA Cup final, losing 4-0 to Sevilla in Eindhoven. The club have been second-tier champions four times, in 1926-27, 1928-29, 1973-74 and 1994-95, and won the FA Amateur Cup in 1895 and 1898 before turning professional for good in 1899. In 1986 Boro came within minutes of folding before a consortium led by Steve Gibson saved them.
