Overview

Swansea in brief

Founded in 1912 as Swansea Town, Swansea City took their current name in 1970 to reflect Swansea's new status as a city. The club played at the Vetch Field from 1912 until 2005, when they moved to the stadium now called the Swansea.com Stadium, opened as the Liberty Stadium. Swansea wear white, a choice taken from Swansea RFC, and are known as the Swans, in Welsh Yr Elyrch, and as the Jacks.

Swansea won the Welsh Cup ten times between 1913 and 1991, which brought regular entry to the European Cup Winners' Cup, and have won three third-tier titles, in 1925, 1949 and 2008. The club climbed from the Fourth Division to the First in four seasons, reaching the top flight under John Toshack in 1981 and finishing sixth in 1981-82. In 2011 they became the first Welsh club to play in the Premier League, and in 2013 they beat Bradford City 5-0 to win the League Cup, their first major trophy in English football.
