Overview

Wrexham in brief

Founded in 1864, Wrexham are widely regarded as the oldest football club in Wales. They played their first match at the Racecourse Ground and have been based there for almost all of their history, apart from two seasons in the early 1880s. The ground staged Wales's first home international in 1877 and is described as the world's oldest international football stadium still hosting international matches. Known as the Red Dragons, as well as the Reds and the Robins, the club play in red shirts and white shorts.

Wrexham have won the Welsh Cup a record 23 times, and that success took them into the European Cup Winners' Cup, where the 1975-76 side reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners Anderlecht. The club won the Third Division title in 1977-78. In 1992 Wrexham knocked reigning league champions Arsenal out of the FA Cup, winning 2-1 through Mickey Thomas and Steve Watkin. Other honours include the 2005 Football League Trophy, the 2013 FA Trophy, the 2022-23 National League title and a record five FAW Premier Cups.
