Overview
Tenerife in brief
CD Tenerife give 8 August 1922 as their official founding date, when a new club took over from Tenerife Sporting Club, founded in 1912, keeping its trophies, players and kit; some fans and historians still argue for 1912. The white shirts and blue shorts reflect the colours of the island's flag, hence the nickname Blanquiazules. Since 1925 the club have played in Santa Cruz at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, after starting out at the Campo de Miraflores.
Tenerife won Segunda Division in 1960-61 under Heriberto Herrera and have spent 13 seasons in La Liga, including ten in a row from 1989-90. Fifth place in 1992-93 and 1995-96 brought two UEFA Cup campaigns; in 1996-97 they beat Lazio, Feyenoord and Brondby before losing the semi-final to Schalke 04. Relegated to the third tier in 2025 after twelve seasons in Segunda, they won their Primera Federacion group in 2025-26 to return.

Well-known names have passed through the island club: Jorge Valdano and Jupp Heynckes coached there, Rafael Benitez led the 2001 promotion to La Liga, and Fernando Redondo, Roy Makaay, Oliver Neuville and Robert Enke all played for Tenerife. The great rivalry is the Canary Islands derby with UD Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, first played in 1950, between two island clubs whose other away games are mostly on the Spanish mainland.
