Overview

Sporting Gijon in brief

Sporting Gijon were founded on 1 July 1905 as Sporting Club Gijones by Anselmo Lopez, then 14, and took the name Real Sporting de Gijon in 1916. From 1940 to 1970 a ban on foreign words in club names meant they were officially Real Gijon. Their red and white stripes explain the nickname Los Rojiblancos. Home is El Molinon, in use since at least 1908 and described as the oldest professional football ground in Spain; it was renamed El Molinon-Enrique Castro "Quini" in February 2018.

Sporting's best league finish was second in La Liga in 1978-79, and they reached consecutive Copa del Rey finals in 1981 and 1982, losing both. They have won Segunda Division five times, in 1943-44, 1950-51, 1956-57, 1969-70 and 1976-77, and have spent 42 seasons in the top flight. The club have played in the UEFA Cup six times, most recently in 1991-92. Their latest relegation from La Liga came in 2017.
