Overview

Karlsruher SC in brief

Karlsruher SC trace their history to 6 June 1894, when young gymnasts from the Karlsruher Turngemeinde founded Karlsruher FC Phonix after the club refused to set up a football section. The present club was formed on 16 October 1952 by a merger of Phonix with VfB Muhlburg, itself created in 1933. KSC play in blue and white at the Wildpark, where Phonix completed a ground in 1923. The stadium was rebuilt from 2018, took the name BBBank Wildpark in 2021 and was officially opened with a friendly against Liverpool in July 2023.

Phonix were German champions in 1909, and KSC won the DFB-Pokal in 1955 and 1956, beating Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV in the finals. A founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963, the club have since won the 2. Bundesliga three times, in 1975, 1984 and 2007, and the 3. Liga in 2013. Under Winfried Schafer, coach from 1986 to 1998, KSC beat Valencia 7-0 in the 1993-94 UEFA Cup and reached the semi-finals, losing to Austria Salzburg on away goals.
