Overview

Sampdoria in brief

Sampdoria were founded in Genoa on 12 August 1946 through the merger of two older city clubs, Sampierdarenese, formed in 1891, and Andrea Doria, formed in 1895. The shirt combines both identities: blue from Andrea Doria and a white, red and black band from Sampierdarenese, which gives the club its nickname, I Blucerchiati. Sampdoria play their home matches at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, a ground they share with city rivals Genoa.

The club's golden era came under president Paolo Mantovani, who ran Sampdoria from 1979 until his death in 1993. They won the Coppa Italia in 1985, 1988 and 1989, then the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1990, beating Anderlecht in the final in Gothenburg. Coached by Vujadin Boskov, they won Serie A in 1990-91 and the Supercoppa Italiana in 1991, and reached the 1992 European Cup final, lost 1-0 to Barcelona after extra time. A fourth Coppa Italia followed in 1994.
