Overview

Guingamp in brief

En Avant Guingamp were founded in Brittany in the autumn of 1912, when Pierre Deschamps, head of the town's higher primary school for boys, set up a physical education society called En Avant. Red and black were chosen from the start, giving the nickname Les Rouge et Noir, and the club joined the French federation in 1919. Since January 1990 Guingamp have played at the Stade de Roudourou, opened with a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain.

Under Noel Le Graet, president from 1972, Guingamp rose to Division 2 by 1977 and turned professional in 1984. They first reached the top flight in 1995, won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1996 and finished a best-ever seventh in 2003. Their Coupe de France wins came in 2009, as a Ligue 2 side, and 2014, both against Rennes in the final. In 2019 they lost the Coupe de la Ligue final on penalties to Strasbourg and were relegated from Ligue 1 the same season.
