Overview

VfL Osnabrück in brief

VfL Osnabruck date from 17 April 1899, when players from the street teams Germania, Minerva and Antipodia formed FC 1899 Osnabruck. A 1920 merger created BV 1899 Osnabruck, which joined Spiel und Sport in 1924, and the club took the VfL name the following year. Known as Die Lila-Weissen for their purple and white colours, they play at the Stadion an der Bremer Brucke, built by Rapid Osnabruck and given back its traditional name in 2017 after sponsored names such as Osnatel-Arena.

Osnabruck have never played in the Bundesliga. Their longest 2. Bundesliga stay was ten straight seasons from 1974 to 1984, and between 2000 and 2024 they never lasted more than two in a row before dropping again. They won the Regionalliga Nord, then the second tier, three years running from 1969 to 1971, the German amateur title in 1995 and the 3. Liga in 2010, 2019 and 2026. In 2009-10 they reached the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals after beating Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund.
