Overview

Benevento in brief

Organised football in Benevento began on 6 September 1929 with Societa Sportiva Littorio Benevento. Several clubs followed through mergers and refoundations, and the present Benevento Calcio took its name in 2005. Yellow and red were first adopted in 1938. The nickname Stregoni, the Sorcerers, and the witch on the badge come from the city's old legends of the witches of Benevento. Home is the Stadio Ciro Vigorito, opened in 1979 as the Santa Colomba and renamed in 2010 after a club director who died that year.

Benevento spent most of their history in the third and fourth tiers. Under Gaetano Auteri they won the 2015-16 Lega Pro group to reach Serie B for the first time, and a year later, under Marco Baroni, beat Carpi in the play-off final to reach Serie A in their first Serie B season, something no Italian club had done before. Their Serie A debut began with 14 straight defeats. Filippo Inzaghi then led them to the 2019-20 Serie B title with seven games to spare.
