Match report
Modena come from behind to sink Benevento on opening weekend
Benevento's Serie B campaign began with a 2-1 home defeat to Modena at Stadio Ciro Vigorito, the hosts undone after leading at the interval. Francesco Salvemini put Benevento ahead in the 26th minute, finishing off an assist from Mattia Maita to send the home side into the break with a slender lead.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Modena turned the contest on its head in the second half. Simone Santoro levelled in the 65th minute, and eleven minutes later Giuseppe Caso struck to put the visitors 2-1 up, a scoreline that held to the final whistle. The result left Benevento pointless from their opening fixture while Modena picked up their first three points of the season.
Benevento had the greater share of possession and doubled Modena's total attempts, firing ten shots to the visitors' five, yet neither side could turn territory into a clear edge, with both teams managing only a single shot on target and near-identical expected goals figures of 0.52 and 0.51.
Salvemini scored Benevento's only goal of the afternoon and was rated the match's top performer at 7.7, though his effort was not enough to prevent defeat.
Despite Benevento holding 53% of possession, the match was remarkably even, reflected in shots on target being level at one apiece.
