Overview

Motherwell in brief

Motherwell were formed on 17 May 1886, when representatives of Glencairn and Alpha, the town's two main works teams, met in Baillie's pub on Merry Street and agreed to merge. The club turned professional in 1893 and joined the Scottish League. After spells at grounds including Dalziel Park, they moved in 1895 to Fir Park, on land leased from Lord Hamilton's Dalzell estate, and have played there ever since. The colours changed from blue to claret and amber in 1913, and the town's steel industry gave the club its nickname, the Steelmen.

Under John 'Sailor' Hunter, their longest-serving manager, Motherwell won their only Scottish league title in 1931-32, when Willie MacFadyen scored 52 goals, still a Scottish top-flight single-season record. The Scottish League Cup followed in 1950 and the Scottish Cup in 1952, but the club were relegated for the first time in 1953 and again in 1968, returning a year later each time. Tommy McLean's side won a second Scottish Cup in 1991, beating Dundee United 4-3 after extra time. Motherwell have stayed in the top flight since 1985, finishing second in 1994-95, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
